  • The Effect of the Growing Trend of ‘Alpha-Male’ Podcasts on Male Mentality

The Effect of the Growing Trend of ‘Alpha-Male’ Podcasts on Male Mentality

Currently, the alpha-male podcast epidemic has emerged as a cultural trend that is slowly shaping the young male Identity. These shows are usually hosted by “male experts” or opinion leaders who call themselves gurus. These podcasts discuss dominance, money, and women as the issues and solutions to contemporary problems. Although they say that they educate and liberate men, alpha-male podcasts have raised concerns on their impact on mental health, relationships and the community’s perception of masculinity. This article delves into how it affects male mentality trends.

Why Do People Listen to Alpha-Male Podcasts?

With modern society turning its attention to questioning gender roles, most men run to the alpha-male subculture for direction. These podcasts predict a chance to go back to the ‘glory’ days of maleness and give the listeners directions on how to succeed in career, with women and in life. The language used mostly has to do with power, autonomy and rejection of the self as weak.

To the lonely man or the man in crisis of identity, such podcasts may be a source of comfort at first. However, the advice given out to women is usually so tainted by patriarchal thinking that it is more about ranking and domination than compassion and shared concern.

Podcasting and the Dark Side of Masculinity

Podcasts as a media have a significant function in the perception of self-identity of men. The current culture of creating the alpha male may be viewed as a reaction to different progressive campaigns fighting for equal rights between women and men. Instead, traditional masculinity is portrayed as in peril, and that type of framing fosters a spirit of victimization that is quite appealing to certain kinds of male listeners.

Such a shift is an excellent example of media impact and the construction of the masculinity concept. While some media outlets are focused on personal development, such as growth, there are others like alpha-male podcasts that thrive on people’s anxiety and capitalize on their insecurities. The outcome, of course, is the skewed representation of what it means to be a man of sound mind, instead opting for brute-force kind of manhood. A classic struggle between brain and brawn.

In fact, one of the most worrisome elements of these podcasts is the fact that they contribute to what has been called a “toxic podcast culture.” Hosts often stereotype the relations between men and women and see women as something to overcome, achieve or pursue. It does not only perpetuate stereotyping but also exacerbates the existing anxieties in men, while objectifying or even villainizing other genders or gender minorities.

One common topic of conversation in these debates is male sexual doubts, which are used to promote a number of products, from exercise to dating advice. Rather than responding to such insecurities with empathy and scientific information, the conversation turns to societal shifts and feminism, which only entrench a patriarchal view in the audience.

    The influence of Alpha-male Podcasts

Most of the time it can be observed that Alpha male Podcasters’ advice is based on material aspects and dominance in relationships as the prerequisites of masculinity. While their fans claim that they are inspirational and are actively empowering men out there, there are critics who believe that these influencers are problematic and that they actively fuel insecurities faced by single men by creating unrealistic expectations.

In this respect, while glamourising richness and authority, their messages tend to make those men who won’t be able to fulfill this stereotype frustrated instead. This serves to emphasize yet again how the idea of alpha male culture can be rather attractive as well as toxic.

    How Patriarchy Affects Men

We usually get trapped into discussions of how patriarchal systems hurt women, but it is very important to realize how they harm the men. Alpha-male culture puts a lot of pressure on men regarding what it means to be a man, and thus limits men to specific roles and prescribed emotional expressions.

For instance, pressure to be the ‘alpha’ breadwinner may worsen mental illnesses especially for men who are unable to measure up to these expectations. Furthermore, masculine-oriented discourse associated with the problem reinforces toxic actions and maintains people’s unhappiness and loneliness.

Some Long Term Effects of Male Mentality Trends

As the trend of the alpha male podcast continues to rise, more and more people see the impact these shows have on the mentality trends of men. Although some listeners may get short term motivation from the podcasts, the messages conveyed in most of them stifle growth. These podcasts do not attempt to solve problems such as manhood loneliness or male sexual anxieties because they perpetuate hyper- masculinity.

On the other hand, progressive debate on the concept of masculinity should promote emotional openness, support for learners’ coping skills and rejection of stereotypes. This approach does not only empower individual men but also promotes healthy relationships and hence creating a healthy community.

Can We Go Beyond the Toxic Podcasting Environment?

In this case, the toxic podcast culture should be fought with an equally strong but positive culture that supports the opposite ideals. Media outlets can thus engage in the construction of progressive discourses and support the promotion of diverse and non-violent conceptions of masculinity. Education can also prevent young men from succumbing to such pressures by providing them with alternatives that do not involve toxic masculinity.

Also, talking about mental health and relationships might help men learn how to solve these issues without reverting to the alpha-male stereotype. This means that by replacing dominance with cooperation we can make things a lot better for everyone involved.

Alpha male podcasts suggest that the culture associated with the representation of male identity is evolving in a certain way. As these platforms provide some relief to some men for some time, their implications in the general tendencies of male mentality are worrisome. Instead, they reinforce an outdated male stereotype and use fear to prevent change that would lead to a much healthier definition of manhood.

Meeting these problems calls for a societal effort of eradicating negative assumptions and replacing them with positive, sympathetic beliefs. Only then can we guarantee that men are comfortable addressing the issues of life’s intricacies without having to adhere to the toxic masculinity views epitomized in these podcasts.

  • Aamir Ali: The Versatile Maverick

Aamir Ali has been part of the entertainment industry for years, though acting wasn’t always his plan—he initially aspired to work behind the scenes in a creative role. However, life led him to modeling, and over time, he discovered a growing passion for acting. His journey, like any career, has had its ups and downs, with patience being one of the biggest challenges. Adopting a sportsman’s mindset, he learned to stay confident, work hard, and trust the process. From television to films and OTT, each experience has shaped him as an actor—while TV trained him well, he appreciates how OTT and films push him to break patterns and keep performances fresh. In this candid conversation, Aamir opens up about his career, personal style, social media, and staying mentally and physically fit—just Aamir Ali, unfiltered.

You’ve been in the entertainment industry for years. What inspired you to pursue acting and modeling?

I never initially planned to be an actor—I wanted to be in the industry but on the creative side. I started with modeling, and my love for acting grew gradually. It wasn’t love at first sight, but over time, I fell for the craft of performing. What keeps me going is my passion for it. Every time I step on set, I treat it like a fun experience, something I truly enjoy, and I’m fortunate to get paid for doing what I love.

What was the biggest challenge you faced in your career, and how did you overcome it?

Patience. In any career, waiting for the right opportunities is tough. Fortunately, I have a sportsman’s mindset—I’m confident, I go for what I want, and I have patience. At times, I even feel lazy in the process, but I know patience is key to achieving the best work.

Many people admire your journey. What’s one piece of advice you’d give to those struggling to make it in the industry?

I’m grateful for the admiration, as I, too, look up to so many people in this industry. My advice is simple: only pursue this path if you truly love it. But also, balance passion with security. Many get so blinded by the craft that they forget to secure themselves. I kept my first job as a cabin crew even while modeling, only committing fully when I was sure. Love what you do, but don’t dive in blindly—balance is everything.

Looking back, was there a defining moment in your career that changed everything for you?

There have been several defining moments. Stepping into television was a major shift when my films hadn’t released. Winning Nach Baliye and venturing into dance, trying comedy in F.I.R., and later moving to OTT to explore myself as an actor were all pivotal. Even before acting, transitioning from my airline job to modeling was a big leap. Each step forward has shaped my journey.

If you weren’t an actor, what other career path would you have taken and why?

If not an actor, I could have been many things—a director, a cinematographer, or even a captain, as many of my airline colleagues pursued commercial pilot licenses. I also have a good understanding of business, so I could have ventured into real estate or entrepreneurship. But acting gives you something beyond money—the love and admiration of people, which is priceless. With so many aspiring actors, I feel truly blessed to be where I am today.

As our audience knows, fitness is a big part of an actor’s life. What’s your workout routine like?

Fitness has always been a priority for me. I love food, especially sweets and desserts, but in the past five to six months, I’ve cut back significantly on maida and sugar, and it’s made a huge difference in my body and routine. I enjoy working out and playing sports, which helps me stay fit. I prefer a lean, healthy body over bulky muscles, and I’ve always maintained that. My philosophy is simple—don’t go by what people say about your body, go by how your clothes fit. My measurements have stayed the same for over 15-20 years, and that consistency keeps me in check.

How do you maintain a balanced diet while managing a hectic shooting schedule? Does being an actor ever require you to bring a drastic change into your diet?

I’ve been lucky to have a fast metabolism, but recently, I’ve made changes—mainly cutting down on sugar and processed foods, and it’s made a huge impact. Even with a hectic schedule, I make sure to eat four to five small, healthy meals a day. In fact, when I’m shooting, my diet is at its best because everything is planned. I don’t believe in taking unnecessary supplements—I never have. The key is to keep things simple: eat right, stay active, and maintain consistency.

Mental health is just as important as physical fitness. How do you deal with stress and pressure in the industry?

Mental health is everything, especially in this industry, where uncertainty is constant. A show can shut down overnight, a project can fall through at the last minute—you have to be mentally prepared for anything. My approach is to focus on happiness. No matter what happens, I don’t let it affect my peace of mind. At the end of the day, if you’re happy, you can handle anything.

What’s one fitness myth that you think people should stop believing?

A major myth is that cutting carbs completely or skipping meals helps with fitness. That’s completely wrong. Your body needs a balanced diet—carbs, proteins, fats, and even some natural sugars. If you starve yourself, you’ll lose muscle, look weak, and feel exhausted. The key is to eat the right quantity, have three to four small meals a day, and stay active. A healthy body is about balance, not extreme diets.

Do you have any morning or nighttime rituals that help you stay focused and energized?

My morning routine is great, but my night routine needs improvement—I sleep too late. In the morning, I start with warm water and kalonji (black seeds) soaked overnight, as well as methi dana pani which helps with bloating. I also have fruits and coconut water to stay hydrated and energized. While my mornings are well-structured, I definitely need to work on sleeping earlier at night.

You’ve been in both television and films. What’s the biggest difference between working in these two mediums? How does the audience differ?

Television, OTT, and films are completely different mediums, each with its own demands. Television is like a full-time job—you’re on set 22 to 28 days a month, shooting daily. On the other hand, OTT and films offer more creative liberty. You get the script in advance, allowing time for preparation, character development, and experimentation.

However, television is excellent training—it teaches discipline, adaptability, and consistency. But I’ve also learned that when transitioning to OTT or films, you need to unlearn certain habits. TV performances can become predictable because of the daily routine, whereas in OTT and films, unpredictability is key. You need to surprise yourself to surprise the audience.

As for the audience, TV has a loyal, long-term viewership, often family-oriented. OTT caters to a more niche, experimental audience that enjoys diverse content. Films have a larger-than-life appeal, where the audience expects grandeur and spectacle.

Fashion plays a big role in the entertainment industry. How would you describe your personal style?

I have a very casual approach to fashion. Even at events, I prefer a relaxed, effortless look. My style is heavily influenced by streetwear—I love comfortable yet stylish outfits that don’t feel overdone. Sneakers are a big part of my wardrobe; I absolutely love them. Even during shoots, my brief to my stylist is always “dressy but casual”—a mix of sharp and laid-back.

Who are some actors or industry figures that inspire you, and why?

There are so many! From childhood, I’ve been a huge Amitabh Bachchan fan. I still remember watching Agneepath in theaters for the first time—when he buttoned his coat and delivered that legendary dialogue, people started throwing coins, and that moment stuck with me. He’s been my idol ever since.

During my growing-up years, the three Khans—Shah Rukh, Salman, and Aamir—were also a huge inspiration. But honestly, every few years, there’s a new actor or performance that leaves a mark. Our industry is evolving constantly, and I find inspiration in the sheer talent around me.

In an era of social media, do you feel pressure to maintain a certain image online? How do you handle it?

Social media has become a huge part of our lives, but I don’t let it dictate mine. I know a lot of people who leverage it to build their brand and make money, which is great. Back in the day, the industry had only 20-25 TV stars at any given time. Now, thanks to social media, so many young talents are getting a platform to showcase their work.

Some content is amazing, some is cringy, but at the end of the day, everyone is doing their thing, and I respect that. Personally, I don’t take any pressure to follow trends. If you look at my social media, it’s just me—no forced trends, no over-the-top gimmicks. I keep it cool, fun, and authentic to who I am.

If you could collaborate with any director or actor in the future, who would it be and why?

There are too many to name! The industry is evolving so fast, and every year, new filmmakers and actors are redefining cinema. Thanks to OTT, we’re seeing incredible storytelling and performances across different genres. My greed as an actor has only grown—I want to work with as many talented people as possible, both veterans and newcomers.

I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with some amazing directors like Hansal Mehta, Suparna Verma, and Jay Mehta. Hansal sir’s Scam 1992 was a game-changer, and his son also produced Scoop, which I was a part of. I just want to keep working with filmmakers who challenge the norms and bring fresh perspectives to storytelling.

  • The Evolution of Men’s Magazines: From Print to Digital Era Trends

    (GQ, November 2020)

    (GQ, November 2020)

If you’re here, you must have a knack for reading magazines and as you know, magazines are more than just glossy pages filled with high quality images and well-written text. They act as custodians of an entire era as time capsules, reflecting the fashion, culture, and mindset of that particular era. From the refined sophistication of GQ to the Generation Z coded hype of digital platforms today, men’s magazines have undergone a dramatic transformation over the decades.

But how did we get here? The answer lies in the transition of men’s magazines from print to digital form and it took place for what possible reasons? This transformation of publication format has introduced which new elements? An examination of what lies ahead for these publications will be a part of our understanding.

We are about to explore the impressive development of men’s lifestyle publications as they adjusted to constant modifications in fashion trends and masculine standards of the media age.

The Golden Age Of Print Media: Defining

    Masculinity

The Golden Age Of Print Media: Defining

    ( source: https://www.artofmanliness.com/living/leisure/vintage-mens-adventure-magazines/

In the middle of the twentieth century, men entered bookstores to browse through shelves, looking for ways to define their masculinity.  Men would often ignore standard news media to eventually land their eyes on Esquire or GQ titles. Imagine this, A man picks up the magazine, thumbing through its content– which transports him to a new universe of sophisticated fashion while presenting abstract ideas and classical elegance. This formed the basis of the masculine dream during this period.

A time of outstanding development marked the beginning of male-oriented publications. Fashion lifestyle and cultural content originated from Esquire (founded in 1933) and continued with GQ (launched in 1957) which at that time, became authorities in the male market. Their main content went beyond style advice because they shared intellectual interviews with literature works and political and entertainment coverage which shaped both male self-image and universal masculine values.

A revolutionary change entered the magazine world during the 1960s and 70s.  Provocative content mixed with sophisticated editorial approach was all about the money. Playboy and Penthouse shook things up in this regard. Playboy, in particular, wasn’t just about centerfolds, you know? It became a platform for sexual liberation while contrasting it with intellectual discourse and everything that a man loves, featuring interviews with some of the biggest names in history.

By the 80s and 90s, the focus had expanded. Men’s Health introduced fitness and grooming into the mix, reshaping how men approached self-improvement– self improvement as a man wasn’t just social anymore, it was personal. Suddenly, magazines weren’t just about looking good—they were about feeling good, performing well, and succeeding in every aspect of life (As it should be!)

But just as these magazines were at their peak, a digital revolution was brewing. And it changed everything.

The Digital Takeover: The Death of Print and Rise of Online Media

    (The Washington Post-Style)

It’s Y2k era baby! Now comes the internet boom of the 2000s. People no longer had to wait for their favorite magazine to hit the stands—they could get content instantly, for free, online. The internet era was rising and quick consumption content was all the rage.

However, for our beloved print magazines, this was a disaster. Readership started to decline. Advertising revenue dropped. Some publications, like Maxim and Details, struggled to survive. Others quickly adapted, launching digital editions, embracing social media, and even creating video content to stay relevant.

But this shift also opened doors for new players. The digital-native platforms Hypebeast, Highsnobiety, and Complex became the central players in the industry. The new men’s publications of this digital age followed digital principles by featuring streetwear designs with sneaker trends, influencer partnerships and trending patterns. Basically, pop culture became all the rage, and staying up to date with pop culture was the ultimate goal of the new gen men!

These platforms adopted a different style from traditional suit and tie media form to appeal to younger and a more fashion-conscious group of print media consumers. The younger generations of Millennials and Gen Z sought more than traditional menswear guidance. Men’s content was all about the upcoming sneaker releases and hip-hop style trends and emerging brands.

What Defines Men’s Magazines Today? The Trends Shaping the Industry

Men’s magazines in the 2020s look very different from their predecessors. Here’s what’s driving the shift:

    Diversity & Inclusivity

The old, narrow definition of masculinity is out. Yes, progress in thought definitely leads to progress in media and Vice Versa. Today’s publications embrace all body types, ethnicities, and gender identities. Modern men’s magazines showcase real men– men in their raw, vulnerable forms—not just the airbrushed versions, not simply the definition created by societal standards.

    Sustainability & Ethical Fashion

Men are now more conscious of where and how their clothes are made. As a result, magazines highlight sustainable fashion brands, eco-friendly grooming products, and ethical consumerism. It’s all about looking good while doing good, and most importantly, feeling good!

    The Rise of Tech-Driven Content

Forget long print articles—video content, podcasts, and social media engagement now dominate the industry. Platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and X (formerly Twitter) are where men’s fashion and lifestyle discussions actually happen.

    Mental Health & Wellness

Gone are the days when “being a man” meant hiding emotions. Modern magazines focus on mental health, self-care, and holistic well-being, finally addressing issues that men were once told to ignore.

The Fusion of Streetwear & Luxury

The fashion industry now integrates sneaker designers into luxury brands together with runway presentations of hoodies alongside formal tuxedos. The blending of two distinct styles defined how modern males present their fashion today.

The Future of Men’s Magazines: Where Do We Go from Here?

The declining trend of print magazine publications meets the ongoing digital media takeover– often making users question which directional pathway will actually prevail. It is likely that men’s magazines will move forward through digital advancements in the future. Expect to see:

    • Virtual reality and Augmented Reality: Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies will let users virtually try clothing choices and see full-360-degree fashion presentation shows at the comfort of their homes.
    • Personalized Recommendations: The programming of AI enables magazines to recommend content based on your style and personal interests as Spotify does with playlists.
    • Intuitive Shopping: Men’s magazines will create intuitive shopping functions within their platforms so readers can easily purchase items they see in their publications.

Why Are Magazines Shutting Down? A Personal Reflection on the Death of Print

Let’s be real for a second, alright? when was the last time you actually picked up a physical magazine? Not scrolled through an Instagram post, not clicked on an online article, but physically flipped through a glossy, tangible magazine? If you can’t remember, then you already have the answer to why print magazines are shutting down.

Print didn’t die overnight. It wasn’t some dramatic collapse. It was a slow fade, like a once-great band releasing forgettable albums until one day, they just stopped touring. And let’s be honest—we, the readers, played a part in this. We got lazy. We got used to everything being one tap away. Why would at a time pay a good amount for a magazine subscription but now, when you can get the same content online for free, why would you? Why wait a whole month for a new issue when social media updates in real-time?

The internet came in like a wrecking ball. Advertising revenue—the lifeline of print media—plummeted as brands shifted their budgets to digital. Magazines that once thrived on subscriptions found themselves struggling to survive. Some tried to adapt. Others quietly disappeared.

Take FHM, for example. Once a global powerhouse in men’s lifestyle media, it was the go-to source for everything from celebrity interviews to fashion and humor. But by 2016, it was done—shut down because the audience that once made it a success had moved on.

Then there was The Men, another casualty of the print apocalypse. A magazine that prided itself on sophistication, culture, and timeless masculinity, yet it couldn’t outpace the digital wave.

These weren’t just magazines. They were cultural landmarks, reflections of their time. And now? They exist as nostalgic relics, outmatched by content that is faster, sharper, and constantly evolving.

But does that mean print deserved to die?

Is This a Good Change? Should You Still Read Magazines?

This is where things get complicated. Because while digital media is faster, more accessible, and (let’s be real) more engaging, something was lost in the process.

There was a feeling of some form of a daily ritual that was associated with the act of reading a magazine—flipping through the pages, smelling the scent of freshly printed pages, finding something unexpected, feeling the weight of a nicely curated storytelling and more. Print wasn’t just content—it was an experience. It forced you to slow down, to engage with ideas beyond a two-second scroll.

Digital content, on the other hand, is a dopamine rush. Quick, efficient, and disposable. You consume it, then move on. There’s no permanence. No real connection. You won’t be pulling up a decade-old blog post to reminisce the way you might stumble upon a vintage issue of Esquire or Men’s Health and get hit with a wave of nostalgia.

So, should you still read magazines? That depends on what you want.

If you crave depth of some real feeling of craftsmanship, and a break from the non-stop digital assault of your eyes with quick media short-form content, then yes—pick up a magazine! Support print while you still can. There’s something irreplaceable about holding a physical piece of media in your hands.

But if you want fast, up-to-the-minute content that adapts to trends in real-time, then digital is where you belong. It’s where the conversation is happening, where culture is being shaped, and where the future of men’s media is unfolding. And though it doesn’t always signify the death of physical print media, it does however, indicate a significant change in print media culture.

Maybe there’s no right answer. Maybe it’s not about choosing one over the other. Maybe it’s about finding balance—honoring the past while embracing the future. Either way, one thing is clear: men’s lifestyle media isn’t dying. It’s just evolving. And whether that’s a good thing or not? Well, that’s up to you.

    The Evolution Continues

Men’s publications have experienced continuous transformation since GQ introduced its tailored elegance during the 1950s yet transitioned to streetwear-based online culture of the modern times. A specialized print enterprise transitioned into an active tech-based media environment that now dominates the market.

These publications have consistently provided men with guidance to manage their style along with ways to stay updated with cultural trends, fitness needs, romantic relationships and personal identity in the face of the changing world.

Despite challenges, the influence of men’s magazines continues to thrive because readers now choose between traditional print issues or digital content. The end of traditional print magazines does not indicate that men’s lifestyle content will disappear because the market demand remains strong, and will always do. Cheers!

  • Chetan Bhagat: Balancing Storytelling and Societal Reflection

Chetan Bhagat: Balancing Storytelling and Societal Reflection

Chetan Bhagat, a name synonymous with contemporary Indian literature, has become a powerful voice in both fiction and non-fiction. Known for his bestsellers that tackle the complexities of youth, love, and ambition, Bhagat’s work resonates with millions of readers worldwide. Whether it’s Five Point Someone, 2 States, or The Girl in Room 105, his stories capture the pulse of modern India with remarkable simplicity and depth.

Beyond his literary success, Chetan is also a celebrated public figure, a columnist, and a motivational speaker. His unique ability to blend narrative with social commentary has made him one of the most influential figures in contemporary Indian culture. In this interview, we dive deeper into his creative journey, his thoughts on the changing literary landscape, and what’s next for a writer who has consistently redefined storytelling in India.

    1. What inspired you to start writing, and how has your writing evolved over the years?

I was inspired to write because I wanted to tell stories that reflected the aspirations and struggles of India’s youth. During my engineering days, I realized that relatable, simple narratives were missing in Indian literature. Over time, my writing has evolved to include deeper societal themes. While I started with light-hearted stories about friendships and love, I now strive to explore contemporary issues that challenge readers to think and reflect, all while keeping my storytelling engaging and accessible.

    2. How do you strike a balance between writing for entertainment and addressing serious societal issues?

The key is relatability. I use humor, drama, and romance to keep readers engaged while weaving serious societal issues into the narrative. Entertainment draws readers in, and then the themes make them reflect. For instance, The 3 Mistakes of My Life entertains with friendship and ambition but subtly addresses communal harmony. I believe the best stories are the ones that entertain while leaving readers with something to think about.

    3. Which of your books do you feel has had the most impact on readers, and why?

Five Point Someone had the most impact because it resonated with a generation grappling with academic pressure and parental expectations. It redefined Indian fiction by showing that everyday stories could be compelling. However, The 3 Mistakes of My Life and Half Girlfriend also struck a chord with readers by addressing themes like communal harmony, inequality, and the power of dreams. Each book connects differently with readers, depending on their personal experiences.

    4. Can you walk us through your creative process while developing a new novel?

I start with an idea or a theme that excites me, often drawn from real-life observations or societal issues. Then, I create characters who feel real and relatable. I outline the plot to ensure the story has a clear structure but allow space for spontaneity. The first draft is rough—it’s about putting ideas on paper. The magic happens during revisions, where I refine the narrative, sharpen the dialogue, and make the story as engaging as possible.

    5. How do you deal with criticism, both as a writer and as a public figure?

Criticism is part of the journey, and I’ve learned to embrace it. Constructive feedback helps me improve, while unwarranted negativity reminds me to stay true to my voice. As a public figure, it’s important to filter out noise and focus on the bigger picture: the readers who connect with my work. Not everyone will appreciate my perspective, but that’s the beauty of being a writer—sparking conversations, even if they’re polarizing.

    6. How do you manage to connect with young readers across different generations?

I stay in touch with the evolving aspirations, struggles, and interests of young people through conversations, social media, and observing societal trends. While technology and culture change, the core themes of love, ambition, and identity remain universal. By addressing these timeless emotions while reflecting the current reality, I ensure my stories resonate with readers across generations.

    7. Your stories often touch on relationships and human dynamics. What do you find most challenging about writing such themes?

The biggest challenge is portraying relationships authentically while keeping them engaging. Human dynamics are complex, and writing them requires a balance of emotional depth and relatability. It’s also important to avoid clichés and show characters growing through their relationships. Ensuring that readers connect with the emotions and conflicts in the story is always a delicate task.

    8. How do you incorporate humor into stories dealing with serious topics?

Humor is a way to make serious topics more palatable. It lightens the tone and makes heavy themes accessible. I often use situational comedy or characters with quirky traits to add levity. The idea is to show that even in the darkest moments, life has its lighter, absurd, or hopeful sides. Humor also helps create an emotional balance in the narrative.

    9. What role does your personal experience play in shaping your characters and narratives?

My personal experiences provide the foundation for many of my stories. Growing up in a middle-class Indian family, studying at IIT, and working in corporate jobs gave me firsthand insights into ambition, relationships, and societal expectations. While my stories aren’t autobiographical, the emotions and challenges my characters face often reflect my own journey and observations.

    10. How do you perceive the role of masculinity in modern Indian society?

Masculinity in India is at a crossroads. Traditional roles are being questioned as men are encouraged to be more emotionally available and supportive. The idea of being a “provider” is expanding to include being a partner and ally. This shift is positive but requires men to unlearn years of conditioning, which can be challenging but is necessary for a more inclusive society.

    11. What do you think is the biggest challenge men face today in redefining traditional notions of masculinity?

The biggest challenge is societal conditioning. Men are often expected to suppress emotions and conform to rigid stereotypes of strength and success. Breaking free from these expectations while navigating a rapidly changing world is tough. Vulnerability and emotional openness are seen as weaknesses, but embracing them is essential for personal growth and healthier relationships.

    12. How do you think men can better contribute to gender equality and a more inclusive society?

Men can contribute by being allies—listening, learning, and supporting women in all spheres of life. At home, sharing responsibilities and challenging stereotypes is crucial. At work, mentoring and promoting diversity can create more inclusive environments. Most importantly, men must reflect on their biases and unlearn behaviors that perpetuate inequality.

    13. Do you believe the portrayal of men in literature and media needs to change? If so, how?

Yes, men are often depicted as either hypermasculine heroes or emotionally distant figures. We need nuanced portrayals that show men as empathetic, vulnerable, and capable of growth. Literature and media should challenge stereotypes and highlight the evolving role of men in society, encouraging healthier, more balanced identities.

    14. What was the biggest turning point in your career as a writer?

The success of Five Point Someone was a game-changer. It showed that relatable stories could resonate with a wide audience and marked the beginning of contemporary Indian fiction. It gave me the confidence to pursue writing full-time and cemented my belief that ordinary stories could have extraordinary impact.

    15. How do you juggle your roles as a writer, public speaker, and screenwriter?

Time management is key. I dedicate focused hours to each role and ensure I prioritize tasks based on deadlines. Writing remains my core passion, but public speaking and screenwriting allow me to explore other dimensions of storytelling. Balancing these roles is challenging, but the variety keeps me motivated.

    16. What advice would you give to aspiring authors in India?

Write authentically and persistently. Don’t chase trends—focus on stories that reflect your voice. Be prepared for rejection but don’t lose heart. Build a routine, read widely, and understand your audience. Most importantly, believe in your story and write for the love of storytelling, not just for success.

    17. How has your background in engineering and business influenced your approach to storytelling?

Engineering taught me structure and problem-solving, which helps in plotting stories logically. Business school gave me insights into human behavior and societal trends, enriching my characters. Both fields made me a keen observer of life, allowing me to write stories that feel relevant and grounded in reality.

    18. What’s next for you—any upcoming projects or themes you are exploring in your future works?

I’m working on a novel that explores the intersection of technology and relationships, a theme I find increasingly relevant. I’m also exploring non-fiction to address issues like modern Indian masculinity. Additionally, there are exciting projects in screenwriting, including adaptations of my books for film and OTT platforms.

    19. What are the challenges that you feel men often have to face in today’s modern society?

Men face the challenge of balancing traditional expectations with modern realities. They’re expected to succeed professionally while being emotionally present in relationships. Societal pressure to conform to outdated notions of masculinity makes it harder to embrace vulnerability and growth. Addressing mental health openly is another significant hurdle.

    20. How do you balance work and life?

I prioritize family time and set clear boundaries between work and personal life. Fitness and mindfulness practices like yoga help me stay grounded. Weekends are for unwinding, and I consciously unplug from work. It’s about being present in the moment, whether at work or with loved ones.

    21. What are your fitness goals, and how do you work on achieving them?

My goal is to stay fit, energetic, and mentally sharp. I follow a mix of cardio, weight training, and yoga. Consistency is key, so I schedule daily workouts, even if it’s just for 30 minutes. I also focus on a balanced diet and ensure I get enough rest.

    22. What’s on your desk?

My desk is minimalist—just a laptop, a notebook for jotting ideas, pens, and a coffee mug. I keep a couple of books for inspiration and a small memento from my IIT days as a reminder of my journey.

    23. What are your favorite five tech products?

    • My Kindle for reading on the go.
    • Noise-canceling headphones for focus and creativity.
    • A fitness tracker to monitor health goals.
    • My laptop for writing and brainstorming.
    • My smartphone for productivity apps and social media.

    24. What’s in your gym bag?

A water bottle, a change of clothes and a towel.

    25. Could you suggest some books that every man must read?

    • Dopamine Nation by Anna Lembke
    • Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari.

Suneet Varma embodies a bridge between Indian heritage and modern luxury, inspiring generations with his creativity, vision, and dedication to artistry. His name stands synonymous with timeless beauty and cultural pride. In this conversation, we delve into his creative process, inspirations, and the evolution of his illustrious career, offering a glimpse into the world of a true fashion icon.

What inspired you to pursue fashion design, and how has your journey evolved over the years?

Well, I was always an artistic child, you know, even through my earlier formative years at school. I always liked to draw, paint, sketch, debate, and read. I was very excited by history. I wanted to know more about other cultures, how people lived, which is also the reason why a lot of my collections are inspired by different cultures, Egyptian mythology, Greek painting, or art from different parts of the world, like the Renaissance.

I think I was meant to work within the arts. The very fact that I took up fashion design was due to the encouragement of my family. My father worked in textiles and understood the potential of design in clothing and textiles for the future. My family was very supportive and guided me toward this field. So, I would say a lot of credit goes to them.

Who were your biggest influences when you started your career in fashion?

I think my biggest influence was my father. He was very artistic, very worldly, and a double major in English literature. He traveled the world and brought back mementos, accessories, and stories that inspired me. For example, when I was three years old, I was drawing Cleopatra from a museum slate in Cairo with his help.

Another major influence was Mr. Martand Singh, India’s textile connoisseur. When I started my career at the age of 23-24, I met him, and he took me under his wing. He taught me everything from grassroots khadi fabrics to Banarasi textiles to working on international projects. He was a mentor and a big inspiration.

How would you describe your design philosophy in one sentence?

My design philosophy is young, exciting, sexy, and futuristic. Fashion belongs to the youth, and it should be current, relevant, and always looking to the future.

What role does Indian culture and heritage play in your creations?

As an Indian, it’s hard not to imbibe the heritage of India in my work. We are the oldest civilization in the world, with influences from mythology, scriptures, Ajanta-Ellora, the Taj Mahal, Islamic art, Mughal art, and so much more. Our heritage is rich with artistry, textiles, and jewelry, and I think it’s part of every Indian’s DNA. All of this naturally flows into my work.

Men are often considered fashion naive. Do you also feel that men are poor at appreciating fashion?

I wouldn’t say men are poor at appreciating fashion; rather, most men are not inclined toward it. They feel safer following a beaten path, but things are changing. Many men now care about how they look and present themselves, and they are becoming more fashion-conscious.

Do you feel that men’s fashion industry lags behind when compared to women’s fashion?

Yes, traditionally, men’s fashion has lagged. But as I said, it’s changing. Men are now excited about their appearance, and this shift is visible in the growing interest in men’s fashion trends and styles.

How do you define “timeless fashion”?

Timeless fashion is iconic. It’s something that continues to remain relevant and gets reinvented over the years. For instance, Jean Paul Gaultier’s work for Madonna keeps coming back. Similarly, I designed a breastplate in 1991, and it’s still in demand for photo shoots and magazine covers. True timeless fashion comes from the heart and withstands decades.

What makes a design truly iconic in the world of fashion?

An iconic design isn’t created intentionally; it emerges naturally when the design comes from a place of genuine creativity. It resonates with people and remains relevant even after years.

How has the global perception of Indian fashion changed over the years?

Indian designers like Gaurav Gupta, Rahul Mishra, and Sabyasachi have gained massive global recognition. Indian design is no longer a fleeting trend but a serious business. Indian designers are now recognized as masters of their craft, and this perception is only growing stronger.

How do you educate your clients to appreciate the craftsmanship and effort behind couture?

Educating clients comes down to showcasing the depth of Indian heritage and artistry. With global interest in Indian fashion increasing, clients naturally become more appreciative when they see the effort, precision, and creativity behind each piece.

What role does storytelling play in your collections?

Storytelling is integral. It connects the designs to history, culture, and personal narratives. Whether it’s through music, the set, or the accessories, each collection tells its own story.

What’s your favorite part of the design process, from concept to completion?

Every collection is a challenge. I enjoy difficult ideas and tedious solutions. It’s a process where concepts evolve, and sometimes the smallest idea grows into the highlight of a collection. The collaboration of music, styling, and creativity makes the process even more fulfilling.

Which one of your collections do you feel best represents your artistic vision?

My artistic vision is represented in every collection. I don’t rest on past laurels; I strive to challenge myself with each new project.

What has been your most challenging collection to date, and how did you overcome those challenges?

Every collection is a challenge, but it’s the evolving ideas and problem-solving within a project that make it rewarding. I tackle challenges by adapting and letting the creative process guide me.

How has technology, such as AI or digital fashion shows, influenced your creative process?

Technology has opened up new avenues for creativity, from AI-assisted design to digital fashion shows. It allows us to push boundaries and reach a wider audience while experimenting with innovative techniques.

How can someone cultivate an eye for recognizing quality and artistry in fashion?

It’s about paying attention to the details—the fabric, the craftsmanship, and the story behind each design. Understanding all the elements that go into making a garment helps develop an appreciation for artistry.

How do you approach designing for different types of clients, from celebrities to everyday fashion enthusiasts?

I tailor my designs to fit the client’s personality and needs. Whether it’s a celebrity or an everyday fashion enthusiast, I aim to create something unique and reflective of their individuality.

What is your take on the rise of sustainable and ethical fashion in recent years?

Sustainability is crucial for the future of fashion. It challenges designers to innovate while being mindful of their environmental and ethical impact.

What advice would you give to someone looking to build a personal style that reflects their individuality?

My advice is simple: love what you do. If you don’t have a genuine passion for fashion, you won’t survive its highs and lows. Don’t pursue it for glamour or attention; focus on the craft and creativity. Build a style that feels authentic to you.

Exercise, especially running, keeps me fit and clears my mind, which is crucial for maintaining balance in life.

How Do You Balance Work and Personal Life?

I genuinely enjoy my work, so balancing isn’t something I actively think about. When I’m working, I’m happy to be immersed in the process. When I’m not on set, I enjoy being at home, but for me, work and personal life blend seamlessly. I find fulfillment in both, and they support one another.

Compared to Women, What Are Some of the Biggest Shortcomings of Men? What Should Men Be Learning from Women?

I wouldn’t say men have shortcomings, but one thing I think men could learn from women is pain management. Women go through so much physically, and their ability to endure pain is remarkable. It’s something that men could learn from. Furthermore, the healthcare industry tends to focus more on male-centered medical studies, which can overlook the unique experiences of women. So, there’s a lot to learn from women, especially in terms of resilience and strength in the face of adversity.
