Mahesh Shetty, driven by his passion for acting since college, transitioned from being a restaurateur to pursuing a career in acting, thanks to the encouragement of friends like Mushtaq Sheikh and Ekta Kapoor. Inspired by stalwarts like Naseeruddin Shah and the perseverance of aspiring actors, he pours his heart into every role. Despite challenges like industry networking, Shetty maintains a balanced life through fitness, a strong support system, and a love for food. He advises men to stay grounded, embrace their dreams, and maintain their mental and physical well-being as he spills the beans with an open heart about being a man in this special interview with Best for Him.
Can you share the story of how you got into acting and what inspired you to pursue this career?
I've had the ‘acting bug’ for a long time. I pursued theatre and did some modelling assignments back in college. Following the Shetty legacy, I was also a restaurateur, but I always knew my true passion was acting. I used to be an introvert and didn't think I had the confidence to pursue it. However, my friends Mushtaq Sheikh and Ekta Kapoor pushed me, believed in my dreams, and helped me discover my extroverted side, which only comes alive when the cameras start rolling. Since then, I haven't looked back.
Who are your biggest inspirations in the film industry?
Many people inspire me. On one side are the stalwarts of the industry like Naseeruddin Shah, Balraj Sahni, Irrfan Khan, Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and many more. On the other side, I'm hugely inspired by the countless aspiring actors who visit Aaram Nagar day in and day out, never losing hope as they wait for that one break in the industry. They give their all to their passion, and it's certainly not easy. I look up to them all.
Can you tell us about a project that holds a special place in your heart?
There isn't just one character or project that stands out for me. As an actor, I pour my heart and soul into every role I portray, giving it my all. Each one holds a special place in my heart and memories.
How do you connect with your characters on an emotional level?
I love reading and imagining characters, using snippets from those characters to build my own. My preparation involves reading the script multiple times and imagining every element of the character's life—what they eat, like, wear, and so on. On set, I believe in letting go. There's always a divine energy present. I soak it in, react to the other actors around me, and let my emotions take over when performing.
Do you feel men are emotionally challenged? How can they express themselves better?
There was a time when men were expected to keep a straight face and hide their emotions to appear strong and in control. However, times have changed. Although it's still a bit challenging, men are now opening up, sharing household responsibilities, and expressing themselves in all aspects of life.
What are some of the biggest challenges you've faced in the entertainment industry?
There's a phrase called ‘Networking’ for work within the industry, and I just can't seem to get myself to do it. As an introvert, I believe in building real and strong relationships, which is, of course, a long-drawn process. To make it worse, I'm not a party person; I enjoy my home, my space, and my comfort above all.
What are some of your goals for the future in your acting career?
As actors, we don't set goals; we have dreams. The industry is unpredictable, and setting goals can lead to stress. I simply dream of working with some of the best in the industry and giving my best every time.
How do you maintain your physical health and fitness amidst a busy schedule?
I am fortunate to have good genetics, but I don't take it for granted. My fitness routine usually involves running, swimming, and callisthenics, which are manageable even with a hectic schedule and photo shoots.
What’s in your gym bag?
I haven't used a gym bag in the last 15 years since I don't go to the gym. I prefer freehand exercises and running on the beach, taking only my water bottle to my workouts.
What are your favourite breakfast options?
I don't like packaged food. For breakfast, I always have a lot of fruits, poha, idli, dosa, and nihari. I love delicious food, and that's how I start my day.
Can you share your diet and nutrition plan?
I don't adhere to a specific meal plan or diet. I consume plenty of fruits and strive to eat well-balanced, nutritious meals most days. I have a strong passion for food and enjoy exploring various cuisines. Delectable food is my weakness.
What do you advise people to do for their basic health?
Eat in moderation, drink plenty of water, exercise regularly, and undergo regular health check-ups. It's the best way to maintain your basic health, I would say.
What practices do you follow to keep your mental health in check?
I work on building a strong support system within my family and friends. There is nothing more therapeutic than discussing your stresses and struggles with those who matter and letting it all go.
How do you manage to balance your professional and personal life?
As an actor, it's challenging to maintain a work-life balance. Sometimes, I have to be away from home for months during a project. However, I consider myself blessed. My partner Anisha is also an actor, so she understands the demands of the profession. This mutual understanding helps us strengthen and maintain our relationship.
What are some of your hobbies and interests outside of acting?
I enjoy travelling, exploring different destinations, and experimenting with cuisines. I love going for long drives, treks, and bike rides. I also enjoy the company of my books.
What advice would you give to men who want to make it in the industry?
Acting is a challenging profession. I would advise all to stay grounded, maintain their sanity, and keep their dreams alive.
