Delayed Ejaculation: A Common Sexual Health Problem

As a man, you must have heard about premature ejaculation, a sexual health condition in which a man ejaculates before he starts the sexual activity. However, there is also a condition known as delayed ejaculation in which a man takes an extra period of time to reach sexual climax and ejaculate during sex. It is also known as impaired ejaculation. Causes of Delayed Ejaculation

Delayed ejaculation can be stressful for a man.

There can be many potential causes of delayed ejaculation such as psychological concerns, chronic health conditions as well as reactions to medications. The psychological causes can be a traumatic experience. Along with that, cultural or religious taboos can give sex a negative connotation. Also, if a man is dealing with anxiety or depression, it can decrease his sexual desire and result in delayed ejaculation.

Relationship stress, poor communication and anger can make it worse. If they get disappointed in sexual realities when compared to sexual fantasies, it can lead to delayed ejaculation as well. Such men are able to ejaculate during masturbation but not during sexual activity.

Apart from that, there are certain chemicals that affect the nerves involved in ejaculation. These are found in medications that a man might be taking such as:

  1. antidepressants, such as fluoxetine (Prozac)

  2. antipsychotics, such as thioridazine (Mellaril)

  3. medications for high blood pressure, such as propranolol (Inderal)

  4. diuretics

  5. alcohol

There can be other causes that can lead to delayed ejaculation, such as:

  1. damage to the nerves in your spine or pelvis

  2. certain prostate surgeries that cause nerve damage

  3. heart disease that affects blood pressure to the pelvic region

  4. infections, especially prostate or urinary infections

  5. neuropathy or stroke

  6. low thyroid hormone

  7. low testosterone levels

  8. birth defects that impair the ejaculation process

Symptoms of Delayed Ejaculation

Delayed ejaculation is a common sexual health problem.

Usually it is quite self evident for man to know that he is dealing from delayed ejaculation. In some cases, you may feel as if you are on the verge of climax but are unable to reach the point of ejaculation. At other times, there may be an erection but no sense of an approaching orgasm.

Some of the other symptoms that you may feel are:

  1. Able to ejaculate during intercourse but only under certain controlled conditions

  2. Cannot ejaculate during intercourse but can with oral sex or masturbation

  3. Can only ejaculate when alone

  4. Unable to ejaculate

Delayed ejaculation can be a frustrating condition for both you and your partner. It can strain your sex life as well as your relationship. However, in order to overcome it, you and your partner have to work like a team, instead of blaming each other. Your relationship requires open and honest communication as well as commitment towards each other to make sure that you are able to cope up with delayed ejaculation.
