Signs that a Man is in a Toxic Relationship

In the beginning of dating your partner, you must have connected a lot. A lot of common grounds must have come up initially and sparks must have flown as you continued dating them. The emotional intimacy as well as the physical intimacy must have sky-rocketed in the honeymoon phase of the relationship and things must have turned serious as well.

However, as the relationship moved on, you are now feeling unhappy and suffocated in the relationship. Things aren’t the same as they were before and even your partner has changed quite a lot. You might be feeling a sense of negativity with your partner and would rather spend time with your friends than with them.

This can be the sign of being in a toxic relationship. While you were happy before, you aren’t happy anymore with your partner. No matter how much you do for them, they are never satisfied with you and disregard you. There are several signs that tell that a man is in a toxic relationship, and we have listed them below. Have a look:

Dishonesty with Your Partner

If you are constantly coming up with lies to spend more time at work, or to spend time with your friends, rather than your partner, that is the first sign that says that you might be in a toxic relationship. This might be because you might not want to spend time with them or worry about how they will react if you tell them the truth.

Lack of Support

In a relationship, both partners need to support each other in all areas, whether it is related to work, emotions or hobbies. However, if you feel that your partner is not supporting you in any of the areas and you feel that there is a sense of competition between the both of you, then you are in a toxic relationship.

A healthy relationship is based on the mutual desire to see each other excel in life, no matter what areas they choose. It should be a moral responsibility of a partner to support you if you are supporting them. However, if they aren’t supporting you back then it is a sign of being in a toxic relationship.

Making No Effort

In a healthy relationship, doing things separately is quite normal; it is not important that couples should do everything together. However, if your partner is taking out no time to spend with you and making no effort to spend time with you or care for you, then it becomes a toxic relationship.

Being in a relationship physically doesn’t mean that they care enough for you. They need to invest in the relationship as well. If they are not making any effort, then it’s better to let them go rather than dragging that relationship which has no future.

Controlling Behaviour

Telling your partner that you are going out with your guy friends for some drinks is normal. Every man does that. However, if your partner is keeping a check on you by calling you after every half an hour to know where you are and get upset that you haven’t replied to their text immediately, then it is something to think about.

This is a controlling behaviour that should not be implied on a fully grown man. If they get irritated or upset about why you didn’t pick their call during a work meeting, it is a big red flag and a sign that you might be in a toxic relationship.

Disrespect

In a healthy relationship, partners never disrespect each other and keep them as each other’s priority. However, if your partner doesn’t think highly of you, is always late for dates and often forgets about coming to important events, it is a huge red flag. It is important to notice this sign as it says that you might be in a toxic relationship.

The Blame Game

Making a mistake (or more) is quite normal as you are a human being and to err is human. However, if your partner has kept a relationship scorecard and keeps counting your mistakes endlessly then it is a red flag that you shouldn’t ignore. Playing the blame game half of the time can tire you out and turn the relationship toxic very easily. In fact, it is a huge sign that if your partner is playing the blame game, then you are already in a toxic relationship.

Lack of Trust

A healthy relationship is stable because the partners trust each other and there is a sense of security in the relationship. Trust is the foundation of any relationship formed and it is based on it. However, if you cannot trust your partner in any way and are always in doubt when you are not with them then it is quite possible that you might be in a toxic relationship. Without trust you will never be able to find that sense of security needed in a relationship.

You Do All the Work

When two people are in a relationship, both of them invest in it and work for the relationship to move forward. However, if it is just you doing all the work and compromises in the relationship, it can be stressful as well as exhausting. If you keep on investing in the relationship, with your partner doing nothing, to please your partner, you will still lose in the end. It is a huge red flag that should not be ignored and you should let go of your partner as soon as possible.

No Self-Care

In a healthy relationship, self care takes place somehow on its own. However, if you are in a toxic relationship, there is lack of self care for sure. You have no idea when the last time you showered or trimmed your beard. However, self care is quite necessary and if you are not taking basic care of yourself then it is a big red flag that should not be ignored. Every man should always practice self care whether he is in a relationship or not.

Losing Out on Relationships

If you don’t remember when was the last time you met your family or friends after you started dating your partner, you are losing your other relationships. This is something that you should not ignore as these relationships with your family and friends are important as well and cannot be lost. This certainly means that you are in a toxic relationship.

Physical or Verbal Abuse

In a healthy relationship, there is harmony and even when there are ups and downs, it doesn’t reach to the point of abuse. However, in a toxic relationship, sometimes, the toxicity level is so high that it reaches to the point of verbal as well as physical abuse by your partner. In such cases, you need to pack your bags and leave the place without looking back again. Physical or verbal abuse is a deal breaker in any relationship and you should not ignore it in any case.

Conclusion

The beginning of any relationship can be amazing and romantic. It can make you feel butterflies in the stomach and you will already start planning your future with your partner. It is understandable with the honeymoon phase going on. However, the reality of your partner is found when you get serious with them in a relationship.

No matter if you live with them or not, once you are in a relationship, you will find the reality of your partner. It is true that everyone has flaws and one should accept them as it is. However, the above given signs of a toxic relationship should never be missed or ignored. They are the base of your relationship with your partner and tell a lot about their personality.

If you find that you are in a toxic relationship after reading all these signs, don’t ignore them, hoping that your partner will drastically change one fine day and will know your worth. The truth is that they already don’t care about you and will never do. If you are hoping that they will recall all the fun both of you had in the beginning or if you will change yourself and your actions, they will change too, it is just a waste of time.

Dragging a relationship in hope for change will be bad for you as well as they will never meet your expectations and you will only end up hurting yourself even more. A toxic relationship has no future and is not meant to lead on. It should be ended as soon as possible. As soon as you see such red flags, you should break up with your partner, as the relationship is not worth wasting time upon.
